Noble ARION in Mythology

Arion was a native of Lesbos, and according to some mythological accounts, a son of Poseidon, that created him by striking a rock in Attika with his trident. All traditions agree in describing him, as a contemporary and friend of Periander, (625-585 b.c) tyrant of Corinth and one of the seven wise man of Ancient Greece. He devoted his life in Dionysiac poetry, his musical compositions and in inventing theatrical trends and dances with lots of participants. Also, his poetry and theatrical skills, named him the ancestor of the famous Greek Tragedies. He was adored like a God by his contemporaries.

Arion is often called the inventor of the dithyrambic poetry, and of the name dithyramb. He also introduced the cyclic dance kuklios choros, a dance committed to God Dionysos, God of happiness.

Renowned as a master of rhythm and an exceptional musician, Arion was said to rival the god Apollo himself. He played the lyre and the guitar, the most common music instruments of Ancient Greece so well, that all living beings, both humans and animals were impressed and mesmerized by his music.

The most famous myth associated with Arion recounts his miraculous rescue by dolphins. While returning from Sicily, where he had won a music contest and amassed great wealth, the sailors aboard his ship plotted to steal his fortune. They gave him two choices: to be killed or to take his own life.

Seeking to delay his fate, Arion asked permission to perform one final song. Dressed in his ceremonial garments, he sang the Orthios Nomos.

Drawn by the beauty of his music, a great number of dolphins gathered around the ship. Arion then leapt into the sea and was carried safely on the back of a dolphin to Cape Taenarum in Laconia. From there, he traveled to Corinth, where he was welcomed and protected by his friend Periander. The dolphin that saved him is said to have died shortly afterward.

In gratitude, Periander erected a monument in Corinth honoring the dolphin that rescued Arion and ordered the execution of the sailors who had threatened his life.

The epithet is connected with dolphins (Greek – δελφύς) recounting the legend of how Apollo first came to Delphi in the shape of a dolphin, carrying Cretan priests on his back.

On the myth of Arion, the dolphin that safed Arion is connected to God Apollo, God of Light in Greek Mythology.

In the myth of Arion, the dolphin that saved him is closely associated with Apollo, the god of light, music, and divine harmony. Whether the dolphin was Apollo himself or one of his celestial servants, Arion emerges as a heroic figure capable of invoking divine light through his supernatural music, for his survival and the protection of his life and fortune.

Also, Arion’s protectors on his behalf, will take revenge and will destroy all of those who attached the noble hero, with the help and secret guidance of God of Light.

Noble Arion, is also placed in the night sky, connected with the constellation named DELFINUS, one of the 88 constellations known in our galaxy, that was discovered by the famous Astronomer of Anxiety Ptolemeus.
